John Lenhart Johnston, 85, of 2 Lenhart Ave., Bemus Point,
and 2555 PGA Blvd., Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., died at 10:36 p.m.
Tuesday (April 11, 2000) in the WCA Hospital.
He was born February 14, 1915, in Bemus Point, the son of George
Anson and Charlotte Lucille Lenhart Johnston.
He was a 1934 graduate of Bemus Point High School, attended Colgate
University and in 1939 earned a bachelor's degree in hotel management
from Cornell University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving
during World War II from 1942 to 1946.
He was a third generation co-owner and manager of Hotel Lenhart
and was a wine and food manager at Breakers Hotel and the Everglades
Clubs in Palm Beach Gardens. He was formerly employed by the Hotel
Jamestown and Statler Hotel in Buffalo.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Sylvan Masonic
Lodge 303 in Sinclairville, Scottish Rite, Jamestown Consistory,
Delta Tau Delta, Cornell Hotel Society, Braw Caddy Clan, Moose
Lodge 2010 and American Legion Post 371 in Palm Beach Gardens.
He enjoyed model ship building and performing magic tricks.
Surviving are a son, John Lenhart Johnston, Jr. of Valencia, Pa.;
a daughter, Barbara Jane "Bebe" Stanbury of Hammondsport,
N.Y.; two granddaughters: Kelly and Leslie Altemus of Valencia,
Pa.; and a brother, George Anson Johnston Jr. of Bemus Point.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Brandt Johnston, whom
he married May 7, 1949, and who died April 5, 1999; and a sister,
Jane Johnston Pardee Finger.
The funeral service will be held Thursday, April 20, 2000, in
the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Daniel G. McBride, pastor of Bemus
Point United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be
in Bemus Point Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and for one
hour prior to the service in the funeral home. A Sylvan Masonic
Lodge funeral service will be led at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral
home.
Memorials may be made to the Bemus Point Volunteer Fire Department.
